What was rumor earlier on Friday has taken a sharper focus as happy hour draws closer on the East Coast: Deadline reports that CAA is in negotiations with financier QED International to pay Arnold Schwarzenegger “top dollar” to star in Cry Macho. Translation: He’s back.
If closed, the deal would pay Schwarzenegger “$10 million upfront and 25 percent first dollar gross on the back end,” numbers similar to what the former Governator pulled down in his heyday.
Based on the N. Richard Nash novel of the same name — Nash wrote the script for Macho before passing away in 2000 — Cry Macho will focus on an old horse breeder (the role Schwarzengger would play) hired to kidnap a rich man’s son from the man’s ex-wife in Mexico. Deadline’s Nikki Finke writes that the Brad Furman-directed film — which 81-year-old Godfather producer Al Ruddy brought to CAA — is being described as “The Ransom Of Red Chief meets Ruthless People with the heartbreak of Paper Moon,” which sounds kinda totally awesome.
